Billy Elliot is a 2000 film that revolves around an 11-year-old boy named Billy Elliot as he pursues his dream of dancing. It is a film about dreams, courage, challenges and love .

What is the movie about?

The story takes place in a small town during the British miners’ strike in 1984-1985. 11-year-old Billy Elliot lives in an ordinary miner’s family. His father Jamie and his brother Tony both participated in the strike, fought against the police, and struggled in poverty. They hoped that Billy would become strong. Despite the difficulties at home, they still collected 50 pence a week to send Billy to boxing lessons. Billy, who originally participated in boxing training, came into contact with ballet classes by chance. Unlike the sense of power of boxing, the elegance and agility shown by ballet deeply attracted him.

Billy secretly learned ballet without telling his family. Under the guidance of his dance teacher, Mrs. Wilkinson, he showed great dancing talent. However, Billy’s ballet dream was strongly opposed by his family. In the eyes of his father and brother, ballet was a “girl’s dance” that was incompatible with the identity of a miner’s family. But Billy did not give up. He insisted on practicing in the difficult environment. He could even be seen dancing beside the strike picket line and in the dilapidated basement.

As time went by, Billy’s efforts gradually changed his family’s views. His father began to understand his son’s love for ballet. In order to support Billy’s participation in the selection of the Royal Ballet Academy, he put aside his dignity and went to work to earn money. His brother no longer objected. In the end, Billy successfully entered the Royal Ballet Academy with his outstanding performance, opening a new chapter in his life.

“You may have a father like this, who wears very rustic clothes and has never been to the city. But he spends everything for your dream. Then he runs away when you succeed.”

Through Billy’s story, the film profoundly expresses the theme of breaking through traditional concepts and class shackles and bravely pursuing dreams. In British society at that time, children from miner families seemed destined to follow in their father’s footsteps and engage in heavy physical labor, while ballet, as a “high art”, was far from the life of the working class. Billy’s choice of ballet was not only a persistence in his personal interests, but also a challenge to the inherent cognition of society.

At the same time, the film also shows the power of family and the transformation of family affection. From the initial misunderstanding and opposition to the sacrifices made by the family to support Billy’s dream, it reflects the tolerance and warmth of family affection in the face of dreams.

detail

In the family scene, the father went from roughly tearing up Billy’s dancing shoes at the beginning to carefully wiping his son’s dancing shoes later. This change in detail delicately showed the change in the father’s attitude. There was also a family sitting in the dim living room, worrying about Billy’s future, arguing and reconciling. These scenes truly portrayed the emotional entanglements of an ordinary family.

Ending: Dreams become reality

At the audition of the Royal Ballet Academy, Billy showed off his dancing talent to the accompaniment of melodious music. The camera switched to many years later, Billy, who had become a professional dancer, danced on the stage, with his proud father and brother sitting in the audience. The boy who once pursued his dream in a small mining town finally shined on a bigger stage, proving the power of dreams with his actions, and bringing courage and inspiration to countless ordinary people.
