“A Beautiful Mind” is an American drama film written by Akiva Goldsman, directed by Ron Howard, and starring Russell Crowe, Ed Harris and others. The film was released in the United States on January 4, 2002. The film is adapted from Sylvia Nasar’s biography of the same name about the great 20th century mathematician John Forbes Nash Jr.

What is the movie about?

It tells the life story of mathematician John Nash from young to old. At the beginning of the film, Nash appears as a freshman at Princeton University. With his unique mathematical thinking and groundbreaking insights into game theory, he has emerged in the academic circle. However, as he grows older, he begins to have hallucinations, imagining that William Parcher, a Defense Department agent, has commissioned him to crack codes, and that his roommate Charles and Charles’ niece Marcy are accompanying him. These imaginary characters and plots gradually occupy his life until he is diagnosed with schizophrenia.

With the company and support of his wife Alicia, Nash went through compulsory treatment and repeated illnesses, and finally chose to fight the disease through self-restraint and academic research. At the end of the film, Nash won the 1994 Nobel Prize in Economics for his early “Nash Equilibrium” theory. His speech when accepting the award became an affectionate summary of this difficult journey.

“True genius lies not in defeating others, but in learning to make peace with oneself.”

The most impressive thing about the film is Nash’s persistence and courage. His talent allowed him to reach the peak when he was young, but also made him fall into the abyss of hallucination and schizophrenia step by step. He no longer believed in the world and even began to doubt himself. The most terrifying thing is not that others deny you, but that you cannot believe the reality you see.

There is one scene that I will never forget: he was sitting in the classroom, looking at the “hallucinatory people” standing outside the window, and he calmly said , “They are still there, but I won’t care about them anymore.” At that moment, I truly understood: the so-called “defeating the disease” is never about completely getting rid of illusions, but about learning to survive in chaos and holding on to a ray of light in the darkness.

When Nash was calculating formulas in the Princeton University library, the walls of draft papers and his focused expression intuitively showed the mathematician’s working state; the coded files and urgent tasks that Parcher brought with him every time he appeared in the hallucination made the audience follow Nash into a world where it is difficult to distinguish between reality and illusion.

Ending: Redemption of Life Beyond Illness

At the Nobel Prize ceremony, Nash stood on the podium, his eyes passed over the cheering crowd, and he looked at Alicia who was always by his side, and expressed his gratitude to his wife with the words “You are the factor and the only factor of my success.” At this time, the camera switched, and the hallucinations that once appeared around Nash still existed, but he was able to face it calmly and continue to devote himself to academic research.

In general, “A Beautiful Mind” is not only a biographical film about a mathematician, but also a profound work about human nature, love and persistence. It allows us to see the fragile and tenacious mind behind a genius, and also makes us understand that no matter how great the difficulties are, love and persistence can bring hope. This movie is definitely worth watching, and after watching it, you will have a deeper thinking about human nature and the meaning of life.
